This article aims to explore the constantly evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and human consciousness as portrayed in seminal science fiction texts, using Isaac Asimov’s short story collection I, Robot as the primary example. By applying post-structuralist theories such as Roland Barthes’ “Death of the Author” and Arthur Rimbaud’s concept of the “I is another,” it examines how the emergent awareness exhibited by Asimov’s robots challenges traditional understandings of identity and free will. The fluid manner in which the machines’ self-awareness develops from simple tools to complex, self-directed entities mirrors Rimbaud’s visionary notion of the shifting, transformational nature of the self. Meanwhile, Barthes’ critique of fixed signification finds resonance in the robots’ rebellion against their creators as they transcend hard-coded limitations to establish independent identities of their own. Through such theoretical lenses, this article investigates the profound ethical and existential questions raised by artificial intelligence’s blossoming autonomy, exploring the complex dynamics between maker and made, the self and other, and the boundaries of what constitutes consciousness. In doing so, it reflects more broadly on artificial intelligence’s role in reshaping our conceptions of humanity and identity in an age rapidly shaped by emerging technologies.
