Navigating Hybrid Identities: The Impact Of English Language Learning On Self-perception And Cultural Identity Among Algerian Efl Learners

Abstract

This study examines the impact of English language learning on the self-perception and identity of Algerian EFL learners. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data from pre- and post-instruction questionnaires were combined with qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews. Results reveal significant increases in openness to global cultures and modest gains in confidence regarding cultural identity. However, connection to native culture showed a slight decline. Qualitative analysis revealed the development of hybrid identities, enhanced global awareness, increased confidence in self-expression, and the preservation of cultural integrity. These findings emphasize the dynamic negotiation of local and global identities in post-colonial settings. The study suggests that EFL pedagogy in Algeria should integrate intercultural communication training, affirm learners' cultural backgrounds, and valorize native languages to promote additive bilingualism. This approach helps prepare students for global engagement while maintaining strong cultural ties.
