Algeria And The Silk Road: Opportunities And Challenges For Africa Between Indian Growth And Turkish Exports

Authors : Benhamida Hichem . Benaissa Abderahmane .

Abstract

This study examines Algeria’s evolving role within the Silk Road framework, focusing on its strategic positioning between Indian economic expansion and Turkish export diversification. The main objective is to assess how Algeria can leverage its geographical, trade, and infrastructure potential to enhance its influence as a regional hub connecting Europe, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Using a mixed-methods approach that integrates empirical data from international databases (COMTRADE, OMC, World Bank, IMF, Eurostat, OEC, Scopus) with qualitative insights from recent academic literature, the paper investigates bilateral trade patterns, Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure investments, and sectoral opportunities. The findings reveal that while Algeria’s trade with India and Turkey has increased over the past decade, its export profile remains heavily dependent on hydrocarbons. Infrastructure projects linked to the BRI show Algeria's potential as a logistics and transit hub, but institutional and regulatory barriers persist. Furthermore, Algeria's intermediary role in African trade corridors offers significant geopolitical and economic leverage, particularly in renewable energy, agri-logistics, and digital services. The paper concludes with policy recommendations to enhance Algeria’s integration into Eurasian-African trade networks through diversification, governance reforms, and strategic partnerships.
