Smart Containers And Their Impact On The Maritime Cargo Transport Contract

Abstract

The maritime cargo transport contract is a consensual agreement that does not require a specific form, but laws and international treaties mandate the issuance of a bill of lading with essential details based on the shipper’s declaration. This ensures information accuracy, with the shipper held liable for any discrepancies. Carriers can refuse to register declarations and make reservations for protection. Shippers and consignees can verify compliance with the bill of lading. These procedures applied to traditional transport until containerization emerged, complicating cargo monitoring. Smart containers, powered by AI, offer solutions to these challenges, reducing disputes in maritime transport contracts
