This longitudinal study examines sex-based differences in Heart Rate Variability (HRV) among elite racewalking athletes and their implications for 20 km performance. Over six weeks, six athletes (four men, two women) were monitored. HRV parameters—measured in supine and standing positions using a Polar H10 and analyzed via Kubios HRV—showed that women exhibited slightly higher vagal activity (average RMSSD: 77.49 ms vs. 74.12 ms for men) and greater intra-group variability, possibly due to hormonal factors or fluctuating training loads. In contrast, men showed a higher LF/HF ratio (1.65 vs. 1.58), suggesting greater sympathetic dominance and more stable autonomic regulation. Men also demonstrated better 20 km performance, averaging 86 minutes vs. 94 minutes for women, improving further to 83.5 vs. 90.5 minutes post-training. While HRV is linked to recovery capacity, no direct correlation with performance was found. Training increased RMSSD in both sexes, with LF/HF remaining stable. These findings highlight the need for individualized training, particularly for female athletes.
