Body Image And Self-concept In Bodybuilders (a Comparative Study Between Bodybuilders And Freestylers)

Authors : Belghalem Mohamed .

Abstract

This study examined at how self-concept and body image perception related among 107 male athletes (60 bodybuilders and 47 freestyle athletes) from the Tlemcen and Tipaza areas of Algeria. Participants in a descriptive research design answered the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, Second Edition (TSCS-2) and the Body Image Scale Shakir (الشقير، 2002). Independent samples t-tests, correlation analysis, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were among the statistical analyses. While self-concept variations between groups were not statistically significant (t = 1.29, p = 0.200), results showed much better body image scores among freestyle athletes than bodybuilders (t = -5.31, p = 0.001). Over the whole sample, body image and self-concept showed a modest positive correlation (r = 0.317, p = 0.001). Sport type explained 25.9% of the variance in self-concept but only 1.6% of the variance in body image according MANOVA results. These results underline the need of sport-specific approaches to mental health support for athletes since they imply that different sport modalities may affect psychological well-being through different routes. The study helps us to better grasp how various kinds of athletic participation could affect people's impressions of their bodies and their general self.
