Gendered Vulnerabilities And Resilience: Exploring The Intersection Of Climate Change And Women's Empowerment In The Mena Region

Authors : Benrahou Sihem .

Abstract

This research investigates how climate change creates specific gendered vulnerabilities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Its primary goal is to illustrate and analyze the unique vulnerabilities and resilience of women in the region. It outlines the impacts of climate change and establishes a framework linking these to gendered vulnerability and adaptation. Ultimately, the study seeks effective strategies for gender-based empowerment to alleviate these vulnerabilities and enhance adaptive resilience. The second objective centers on the examination of effective strategies aimed at promoting women's empowerment to address existing disparities and bolster resilience in the face of various challenges. Engaging with local communities and conducting a thorough review of existing literature on gender and climate-related issues is imperative to elucidate women's perspectives on the recent climate changes observed in the MENA region. Local participation is vital for fostering resilience and empowering individuals confronted with the impacts of climate change. Nonetheless, the contributions of women are frequently overlooked in the formulation of climate policy, underscoring the necessity for actionable empowerment strategies that can be utilized by policymakers. This research paper endeavors to facilitate the development of gender-sensitive adaptive policy frameworks, while recognizing the complexity associated with meeting the diverse needs of all individuals. The findings of this research challenge such reductionization, demonstrating the need for more targeted, systematic, and gender-sensitive approaches in addressing women’s vulnerabilities and enhancing their adaptive capacities to climate change in the MENA region. In conclusion, it is recommended that a critical priority for researchers and practitioners is the development and validation of robust metrics. This entails addressing the challenge of operationalizing and measuring women’s empowerment within the context of climate change. Specifically, there is a need to establish reliable and valid indicators that accurately reflect the complex and dynamic interplay between empowerment processes and the environmental changes that influence them.
