This research traces the evolution of African American identity from slavery to freedom in American poetry. It explores images of displacement, slavery, and racism to portray the extent to which African American identity evolved throughout six main periods. It employs the concept of poetry as a witness in the reading of selected poems that served as a powerful vehicle for expressing Black Americans’ journey towards equality and social justice. The paper shows that aesthetic and historical dimensions cross thematically to convey the continuous debate on slavery and the ongoing social struggle to achieve gender and racial equality. Poetry stands as a witness to the challenges and transformations that occurred in the struggle to realize a dream of passing, current, and coming generations. The paper concludes that through poetry individual narratives and personal perspectives are an archive witnessing a generationally endured past and a collectively celebrated heritage.
