Abstract: The purpose of this study is to assess the nature of the relationship between investment in research and development. (R&D) and corporate profitability. Evidence suggests that R&D has a strong and positive impact on corporate profitability and performance. Sonatrach, an Algerian oil and gas company, was selected to study the impact of R&D investment on its profitability, Measured using a set of financial metrics: profit margin, return on assets (ROA), return on investment (ROI), and return on equity (ROE).This study uses data from Sonatrach's annual financial reports for the period 2007-2023, analyzed using multiple linear regression in SPSS v26. The results of this study indicate a moderate negative relationship between R&D indicators (R&D intensity and average number of training days per employee per year) and corporate profitability, Defined by profitability metrics. A greater investment in R&D leads to lower profitability.
