This study paper provides an outline of how systemic functional linguistics can be used as a theoretical framework and an effective instrument for teaching translation, as both are focused on meaning. The research focuses on modality, and it aims to explore how the use of modality systems’ analysis by translation students will allow them to determine the accuracy of the decisions made by translators regarding lexico-grammatical instantiation in the target text. To reach this goal, using the descriptive approach based on the comparative analysis of two parallel popular science texts and their translation into Arabic is necessary. The study results concluded that analyzing modality systems in both source and target texts using systemic functional linguistics will help students realize the importance of metalinguistic elements in translation, and thus, will enable them to make the right decisions in the future while translating modality in popular science texts.
