AL-MUTARĞIM المترجم (The Translator) is an international, biannual, double blind peer-reviewed, free of charge, and open-access journal published in both online and print versions by the laboratory: « Didactics of Translation and Multilingualism », which is affiliated to the Institute of Translation, University of Oran1 Ahmed BEN BELLA - ALGERIA. AL-MUTARĞIM only carries original and unpublished articles in Arabic, English, and French that reflect the latest research and developments in the fields of Translation studies, Terminology, Interpreting, Didactics of Translation, Didactics of languages, Languages Studies, and Cultures. AL-MUTARĞIM targets postgraduate students, professors and all researchers around the world within the framework of its specialization in order to exchange researches and results. AL-MUTARĞIM also aims to complement, strengthen and transform the vision of translation. All papers are welcomed and can be sent after the call for contributions.

A Psycholinguistic Investigation of Translation Strategies and Processes in Jordan

Résumé: This study explored the psycholinguistic investigations of translation strategies and processes employed by BA translation students at Yarmouk University, Jordan, while translating media texts into Arabic. The study used the Think-Aloud Protocol as a technique of collecting data. The subjects were given a political news text in English and were requested to translate it into Arabic. They were asked to videotape the translation process. Then, they were requested to respond immediately to a questionnaire explaining the cognitive processes and translation strategies they used during the translation process. The study drew on Gerloff’s (1986) Text-processing Strategies model, which comprises features from Krings’ and Lörscher’s models, as a theoretical framework. The study found that the strategy of General Search and Selection at the text level was employed most frequently (i.e., language-based strategies), followed by Storage and Retrieval and Editing. On the other hand, other strategies, namely, Linguistic Analysis, Text Contextualization and Problem Identification were also used (i.e., linguistic-based strategies). This study recommends that undergraduate translation students need proper training to use these strategies in order to recognize, and use them at the larger textual levels.
