The Theorizing In International Migration: From Classical Theories To Transnational Appraoch

Authors : Daha Salim .

Abstract

Classical theoretical analyses of migration were confined within the national-state framework that ignored new transnational societies. It made the state the unit of analysis and all social interactions had to conform to its political and geographical boundaries. Many researchers now, including Peggy Livett of Harvard University and Nadya Orsky of Yale University, argue that the activities of current migrants have crystallized many of the links and relationships between their countries of origin and the country in which they are located. They have acquired a social life that transcends the borders of countries, while the political and cultural borders between countries remain strong. This type of migration is called transnational migration.
