Algerian Amazigh Cinema: A Tool For Cultural Heritage Preservation And Identity Formation

Abstract

Abstract: Amazigh cinema has played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Algerian cultural heritage, particularly after the official recognition of the Amazigh cinema has played a crucial role in preserving language in 2002. This cinematic movement serves as a medium to document and reflect the linguistic, artistic, and historical richness of the Amazigh identity. However, despite its cultural significance, Amazigh cinema faces substantial challenges, including financial constraints, limited accessibility, and a struggle to modernize its narratives while maintaining its authenticity. This paper critically examines the role of Amazigh cinema in heritage preservation, its representation of identity, and the obstacles hindering its development. Through a comparative and analytical approach, the study evaluates the impact of Amazigh cinema on Algerian cultural discourse and discusses strategies to enhance its sustainability in a globalized world. Résumé : Le cinéma amazigh joue un rôle essentiel dans la préservation et la promotion du patrimoine culturel algérien, en particulier depuis la reconnaissance officielle de la langue amazighe en 2002. Ce mouvement cinématographique constitue un moyen d’exprimer et d’immortaliser la richesse linguistique, artistique et historique de l’identité amazighe. Cependant, malgré son importance culturelle, le cinéma amazigh fait face à des défis majeurs, notamment des contraintes financières, une accessibilité limitée et la difficulté de moderniser ses récits tout en conservant son authenticité. Cet article examine de manière critique le rôle du cinéma amazigh dans la sauvegarde du patrimoine, sa représentation de l’identité ainsi que les obstacles freinant son développement. À travers une approche comparative et analytique, l’étude évalue l’impact de ce cinéma sur le discours culturel algérien et explore des stratégies pour renforcer sa pérennité dans un monde globalisé.
