Agricultural Contributions To Economic Development In Algeria: An Ardl Model

Authors : Gassem Mohammed Fouad .

Abstract

This study examines the role of agriculture in Algeria's economic development, focusing on its contributions to GDP and employment using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. The research investigates both short- and long-term relationships between agricultural factors and economic growth, with data spanning from 1990 to 2022. Empirical results show that agricultural indicators, particularly freshwater withdrawals and R&D investments, significantly impact economic growth in the long term. Conversely, short-term impacts appear weaker, with employment in agriculture showing initial negative effects due to workforce adjustments. Diagnostic tests confirm the model’s reliability, underscoring the resilience of Algeria’s agricultural sector. This study suggests that enhancing water management, increasing R&D funding, and balancing labor with mechanization are essential strategies for optimizing agricultural contributions to sustainable economic growth in Algeria.
