Evaluating The Introduction Of English-medium Instruction At The University Of Algiers 2: A Case Study Of The Faculty Of Human Sciences (academic Year 2023/2024).

Abstract
بدأ حضور اللغة الإنجليزية في المشهد الجامعي الجزائري يتبلور بتشجيع من السلطات العمومية الداعمة لإدماجها في التعليم الجامعي. التزمت كلية العلوم الإنسانية بجامعة الجزائر 2 بهذه السياسة بداية من السنة الجامعية 2023/2024 ببرمجة وحدة في السنة الأولى (جذع مشترك) لتدرس باللغة الإنجليزية. هذه التجربة الأولى تستحق دراسة تقييمية أولية لمعرفة ظروف سيرها ومدى تجاوب الطلبة معها من خلال تقدير درجة الفهم والاستيعاب في بيئة تعتمد تقليديا على اللغة العربية و/أو الفرنسية. تم الاعتماد على منهج مختلط يجمع بين الملاحظة وتوزيع استبيان على 500 طالب من المجموعتين 3 و4 بهدف الحصول على مؤشرات لمستويات الاستيعاب والصعوبات والثقة في استخدام لغة جديدة. أظهرت النتائج أن 47.5% من المستجوبين مستواهم في الانجليزية متوسط ومع ذلك، يشعر51% بالثقة في متابعة تعليم باللغة الإنجليزية وأن 82.5% يبذلون جهودًا لتحسين كفاءتهم اللغوية. The English language is beginning to take shape within the Algerian university landscape. Encouraged by public authorities supporting its integration into higher education, the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Algiers 2 has, since the 2023/2024 academic year, introduced the teaching of a first-year module in English. This study aims to assess the use of a foreign language ranked as the second foreign language in the national education system. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining observation and the distribution of a questionnaire to students in sections 3 and 4, in order to gather indicators on their levels of comprehension, challenges, and confidence in using a new language. The results showed that 47.5% of respondents have an average level of English. However, 51% feel confident in the language, and 82.5% are making efforts to improve their language skills. La langue anglaise dans le paysage universitaire algérienne commence à prendre forme. Encouragé par les pouvoirs publics soutenant son intégration dans l’enseignement universitaire, la Faculté des Sciences Humaines de l’Université d’Alger 2 a depuis l’année académique 2023/2024 programmé l’enseignement d’un module de première année (tronc commun) en langue anglaise. Cette étude envisage d'évaluer l’usage d’une langue étrangère classée seconde dans le système éducatif national. Une approche mixte a été utilisée, combinant observation et distribution d'un questionnaire aux étudiants des sections 3 et 4, dans le but d'obtenir des indicateurs de niveaux de compréhension, de difficultés et de confiance dans l'utilisation d'une nouvelle langue. Les résultats ont montré que 47,5% des interrogés ont un niveau d'anglais moyen. Cependant 51% se sentent confiants dans cette langue et 82,5% font des efforts pour améliorer leurs compétences linguistiques.
