New Woman Or Traditional Woman? Exploring The Female Figure Under The Spotlight Of Mario Camerini's Cinema In Fascist Italy

Authors : Ouchtati Zoubeida .

Abstract

Abstract This article looks at the representation of women in Italian fascist cinema, focusing specifically on two works by renowned director Mario Camerini: Le Rotaie and Il Signor Max. By combining a filmic analysis with a historical and cultural contextualization, the study explores how these films articulate the tensions between modernity and traditions in the representation of women. The article highlights the technical representatives used by Camerini to portray women in the political and ideological context of Italian fascism. This article has shown how Italian fascist cinema built and propagated specific genre ideologies during this tumultuous period of Italian history. The woman, in this context, is used as a propaganda tool capable of making known the fascist ideals who present themselves contradictory. This contradiction is put into values in the corpus chosen through two notions “new woman” and “traditional woman”. The protagonists realize at the end of these two films that the only solution to save themselves and find their mental and social balance is to return to traditions (family and marriage). This reminds us of the archetype of the Italian fascist woman who is destined to be a housewife, a good wife and a good mother.
