Democratic Transition In The Arab World: A Study Of Internal And External Causes

Authors : Guettaf Temam Asma .

Abstract

This research paper explores the nuanced distinctions between democratic transition and related terms, aiming to identify the most pivotal internal and external factors that have influenced the processes of democratic transition observed in Arab nations. The study posits that the impetus for democratic change in these countries has predominantly originated from external pressures and demands, thereby complicating the transition in numerous Arab states. This complexity arises from the introduction of reforms across political, economic, social, and cultural domains, enhancements such as improving human rights records, fostering citizen involvement in civil society organizations, and other measures motivated by a desire to engage with the global system and to achieve political and economic objectives that enhance the efficiency of these systems. This is particularly relevant in the context of increasing social mobility within many Arab regimes.
