This study aims to critically analyze the Orientalist discourse as conceptualized by Edward Said, with the primary objective of deconstructing its epistemological foundations and examining its historical function in shaping Western representations of, and authority over, the Arab-Islamic world, employing a methodological framework that synthesizes critical discourse analysis and postcolonial theory, whereby it utilizes Said’s adaptation of Michel Foucault’s knowledge-power nexus and Antonio Gramsci’s concept of cultural hegemony to interrogate how Orientalism operated as a unified system of thought. The analysis concludes that, from Said’s perspective, Orientalist discourse constitutes a coherent ideological system built upon an ontological distinction between East and West, which manifests in rigid binaries and persistent stereotypes that construct a static and inferior image of the Orient, a representation that actively served to justify imperial domination by portraying Eastern societies as incapable of self-representation, thereby fundamentally exposing the instrumental link between scholarly knowledge and political power and initiating a paradigm shift in the humanities toward critiquing cultural hegemony and the politics of representation.
