This study examines digital innovation as a multidimensional, systemic phenomenon that extends beyond a narrow technical understanding to encompass organisational, cultural, and human dimensions. Its relevance stems from the accelerating transformations driven by artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things, which have reshaped the foundations of competitiveness and value creation. A descriptive-analytical method was adopted, reviewing and synthesising the theoretical literature across four axes: the conceptual framework of digital innovation and its distinction from related notions such as digital transformation and artificial intelligence; its historical evolution from Greek philosophical roots to the digital age; the principal explanatory theories, chiefly the digital innovation network theory and Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory; and finally the organisational and cultural environment surrounding it, including its drivers and barriers. The study concludes that digital innovation cannot be reduced to a technical tool, and that institutional success in adopting it depends on aligning technological change with a parallel cultural and human transformation, alongside the need to address the widening digital divide between nations through targeted national policies and effective research partnerships.
