The Psychological Dimensions In Marginal Poetry During The Fourth Century Ah: An Applied Analytical Study (ibn Sukkara And Ibn Al-hajjaj As Models)

Authors : Bouchemal Abdel Fettah . Ailane Omar .

Abstract

This research seeks to examine marginal poetry in the fourth century AH from a psychological perspective that moves beyond the dominant moral judgments that have reduced Ibn al-Hajjaj’s absurdity and Ibn Sukra’s libertinism to merely manifestations of artistic decline. The study is founded on the premise that explicit language and colloquial imagery do not necessarily signify a deterioration of aesthetic standards; rather, they operate as mechanisms of psychological release and symbolic compensation within a pressured Buyid reality marked by crisis, deprivation, and alienation. The research adopts a psychological approach supported by artistic analysis, investigating the poetry of the two poets through the concepts of repression, compensation, catharsis, regression, and defense mechanisms, while incorporating the theoretical frameworks of parody and carnival. The study demonstrates that absurdity in Ibn al-Hajjaj’s poetry functions as a defensive mechanism that challenges the taboos of the elite and reconstructs the fragmented self through a process of reversed sublimation; that Ibn Sukra’s depictions of poverty and coldness represent direct expressions of the deprivation complex and bodily anxiety; and that the shared psychological distress experienced by both poets is manifested through their instinctive vocabulary and caricatured imagery.
