This article examines the deployment of the mythic symbol in the novel Iseel by the Libyan novelist Saher Al-Saher, proceeding from the premise that the narrative constructs an implicit Sisyphean correlative through which the tragedy of contemporary Arab humanity is represented, suspended between the inevitability of fate and the absurdity of confrontation. The study aims to uncover the mythical structure embedded within the text and to analyze the transformation of the protagonist Saher’s struggle with his past and homeland into a Sisyphean rock that he relentlessly carries through an endless and seemingly futile effort, journeying from Sana’a to Baraqish, then Al-Ukhdood, and ultimately Istanbul, without attaining a form of salvation capable of freeing him from the persistent domination of fate and memory. The research adopts the mythical approach, complemented by thematic analysis, to investigate the Sisyphean correlative and its interconnected symbolic configurations: “Al-Sayyab’s Sun” as a symbolic manifestation of the cruelty and inevitability of fate, the character of “Al-A‘raj” as a representation of the oppressed and defeated human condition reconciled with the burden of his own rock, and “Iseel” as a symbol of the alternative homeland and the potentiality of salvation. The study concludes that the novel, through the dialectical relationship between fate and absurdity, formulates a vision that transcends nihilistic resignation by transforming love and writing into acts of resistance that restore meaning to seemingly absurd struggles, thereby presenting its Sisyphean figure as a symbol of defiance rather than submission.
