Dedollarization In The Global Monetary System: Risks And Opportunities For Algeria's Economy

Authors : Zeghbid Nassim Lotfi .

Abstract

This article analyses the dynamics of dedollarization in the global monetary system and implications for the economy of Algeria. Motivations for dedollarization, including geopolitical reorientations, reserve currency diversification, and the emergence of alternative monetary systems are examined. Potential boons for the economy of Algeria, including decreased openness to exchange rate risk, strengthened monetary autonomy, and facilitated trade diversification outside the dollar safe haven, are also measured. Costs of dedollarization are explored, including transition costs, liquidity contraction, and exposure to volatile liquid assets. This paper delineates Algeria’s dependencies, policy alignment, and geopolitical positioning in the current financial landscape. Ultimately, a coordinated, gradual approach to dedollarization could buttress Algeria’s economic immunity, minimizing exposure to macro financial instability.
