Abstract Alpha oscillations (8-13 Hz) are a fundamental neural mechanism for attentional control, crucial for selective attention and working memory. This critical review synthesizes neuroscience and educational research to evaluate their application in understanding learning states like cognitive load and engagement. Our analysis confirms alpha activity is a robust biomarker for attentional selection, potentially "protecting" working memory. However, its application in education is nuanced; findings on cognitive load are promising but inconsistent, and methodological issues, such as separating aperiodic brain activity, remain significant. We conclude that while alpha provides a valuable bridge, a direct causal role in complex learning is not fully established. Future research must prioritize ecological validity in dynamic classrooms and develop feasible, ethical interventions for educational neuroscience to realize its potential.
