The Practices Of Systematic Torture By French Colonialism In Algeria (1954–1962): A War Crime And A Crime Against Humanity

Authors : Aouadi Messaoud .

Abstract

This study examines the practices of the French colonial in systematic torture in Algeria, particularly following the outbreak of the Algerian Revolution, until Algerians became a testing ground for newly developed methods of torture, in which executioners from various colonial repressive apparatuses excelled. thus turning it into an established method, for which it created dedicated schools, centers, and specialized apparatuses, as well as training officers specifically in its application. As a result, systematic torture in all its forms (both physical and psychological) became an organized and officially sanctioned practice, carried out under the supervision and endorsement of the French state. In doing so, France committed both a war crime and a crime against humanity.
