Do Personal Values Drive Or Constrain Entrepreneurship? Schwartz’s Value Domains And Entrepreneurial Attitudes Among University Students In Algeria

Authors : Abdelmadjid Bekai .

Abstract

This article examines how basic human values shape entrepreneurial attitudes among university students in Algeria, a context in which cultural expectations of stability and secure employment often compete with national aspirations for innovation and economic diversification. Anchored in Schwartz’s theory of basic human values and the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study surveyed 300 students at Ibn Khaldoun University of Tiaret using the Schwartz Value Survey and an adapted Entrepreneurial Attitude Index. Correlational analyses show that the Conservation domain (security, conformity, tradition) is negatively associated with entrepreneurial attitudes (r = −0.35), whereas Openness to Change (r = 0.42) and Self-Enhancement (r = 0.39) operate as facilitators. Self-Transcendence values were unrelated to conventional entrepreneurial attitudes but correlated positively with social entrepreneurial attitudes (r = 0.28), suggesting that community-oriented values may find expression through socially driven ventures rather than commercial ones. The results indicate that value priorities function simultaneously as levers and brakes on students’ entrepreneurial dispositions. The article concludes with implications for higher education institutions and policymakers seeking to cultivate an entrepreneurial culture that is compatible with the value structure of Algerian society.
