Abstract
Abstract: This study addresses food security in Algeria from the perspective of comparative advantage. It focuses on the tension between efficiency-based specialization and the need to maintain a certain level of food sovereignty. It draws on a descriptive and analytical approach, linking the theoretical framework to the realities of the agricultural sector through indicators, such as: production, water use, productivity, and cereal imports. The findings suggest that full self-sufficiency remains difficult due to structural and environmental limits, particularly water scarcity, rising costs, and climate pressures, which reduce the competitiveness of some local production. At the same time, heavy reliance on international markets is not without risk. In this context, the study leans toward a “selective self-sufficiency” approach, combining targeted domestic production with specialization and a measured use of trade, while stressing the role of technology in improving efficiency and supporting long-term food security.
