Compulsive Gambling Among Young People In Algeria In The Digital Age: A Sociological Analysis Of An Emerging Phenomenon

Abstract
This article offers an in-depth sociological analysis of compulsive gambling among young people in Algeria, based on a qualitative field study conducted in the wilaya of Béjaïa and enriched by a dense engagement with both Francophone and Anglophone academic literature. Moving beyond a strictly clinical understanding of pathological gambling, the study highlights the social, economic, cultural, and digital determinants that structure entry into gambling, its intensification, and its chronicization. The analysis demonstrates that compulsive gambling constitutes a social symptom revealing the structural fragilities of contemporary Algerian youth, caught between precarity, biographical uncertainty, and the illusory promise of rapid social mobility. يقدم هذا المقال تحليلاً سوسيولوجياً معمّقاً لظاهرة القمار القهري لدى الشباب في الجزائر، اعتماداً على دراسة ميدانية نوعية أُجريت في ولاية بجاية، ومدعّمة بتفاعل كثيف مع الأدبيات الأكاديمية الفرنكوفونية والأنغلوساكسونية. ومن خلال تجاوز المقاربة السريرية الصرفة للقمار المرضي، تسلّط الدراسة الضوء على المحددات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والثقافية والرقمية التي تنظّم الدخول إلى الممارسة القمارية، وتكثيفها، وتحولها إلى سلوك مزمن. ويُظهر التحليل أن القمار القهري يشكّل عَرَضاً اجتماعياً كاشفاً للهشاشة البنيوية التي تميّز الشباب الجزائري المعاصر، العالق بين الهشاشة الاجتماعية، وعدم اليقين البيوغرافي، والوعد الوهمي بالحراك الاجتماعي السريع.
