This study investigates the structural dynamics of precarious housing in South Africa, emphasizing its intersection with urban economic inequality. Utilizing official indicators from 2000 to 2025, including Statistics South Africa and UN-Habitat datasets, the analysis examines informality, income disparities, and access to basic services across major metropolitan regions. Findings reveal that informal settlements persist despite improved service provision, reflecting a resilient, structurally embedded phenomenon shaped by labor market exclusion, persistent income inequality, and spatial-economic marginalization. The study highlights the limitations of service-oriented interventions in addressing housing precarity and underscores the necessity of integrated policy frameworks that simultaneously target housing, employment, and urban inequality. These insights contribute to urban studies by framing precarious housing as both an economic and socio-spatial institution within unequal cities.
