Abstract The contemporary world is witnessing an increasing number of violations against religious beliefs, particularly in light of the rapid development of media and the misuse of freedom of opinion and expression. This study aims to clarify the concept of international criminal protection of religious beliefs and its importance in maintaining social stability. It also analyzes the most significant international legal texts and resolutions that criminalize the contempt of religions and incitement to religious hatred. The study concludes that the international legal framework provides a preliminary level of protection for religious beliefs; however, it suffers from shortcomings in practical implementation. This is mainly due to the absence of a unified international definition of crimes against religious beliefs. Accordingly, the study emphasizes the necessity of developing international legal mechanisms to achieve a balance between freedom of expression and the protection of religious beliefs from abuse.
