This study explores how the Almoravid movement achieved unity in the Maghrib and al-Andalus through the complementary roles of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yāsīn and Yūsuf ibn Tashfīn. While Ibn Yāsīn laid the ideological and spiritual foundations through his religious teaching, ribāṭ practices, and call to jihād, Ibn Tashfīn transformed these principles into political and military achievements, consolidating a powerful state. Drawing on medieval chronicles and modern scholarship, the paper employs a descriptive-analytical method to trace the evolution of the Almoravids from a small reformist movement to an empire spanning North Africa and Iberia. The findings suggest that the dynasty’s success lay in the synergy between religious conviction and pragmatic statecraft. The study contributes to Maghribi and Islamic historiography by showing how complementary leadership enabled the creation of one of the most influential dynasties of the medieval western Islamic world.
