The Role Of Green Finance And Technological Innovation In Supporting The Energy Transition: The Case Of Germany

Authors : Ait Bachir Lynda .

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the evolution of green finance in Germany and its link to renewable energy and innovation from 2014 to 2025 using aggregated secondary data. The findings show that Germany’s sustainable finance system has matured, shifting from predominantly sovereign issuance to a diversified corporate market. Although green finance strongly supports electricity decarbonisation-reaching a 52% renewable share-progress in primary energy and transport remains limited. Importantly, while capital flows have increased, domestic renewable energy patent activity has declined. The study concludes that green finance accelerates infrastructure deployment but does not automatically sustain innovation, underscoring the need for targeted support in next-generation technologies.
