The Rural-urban Dilemma In Shaping Urban Identity: A Reading In Rural Sociology

Abstract
This study adopts theoretical-analytical research approach, grounded in rural sociology, to examine the role of the rural–urban dilemma in the construction of urban identity. Rather than relying on empirical fieldwork, the research is based on a critical analysis of sociological theories, conceptual frameworks, and scholarly literature addressing urbanization, migration, and socio-spatial transformation. The primary objective of the research is to **analyze how rural values, practices, and social representations interact with urban modernity** and how this interaction contributes to the shaping of urban identity. It also seeks to highlight the mechanisms—such as rural–urban migration, cultural hybridization, and economic restructuring—through which rural elements are integrated, transformed, or marginalized within urban contexts. The results of the study demonstrate that urban identity is not a homogeneous or static construct, but rather a **dynamic and hybrid process** shaped by continuous exchanges between rural and urban spheres. Rural traditions persist within cities, influencing social relations, cultural expressions, and spatial organization, while urban conditions simultaneously reshape rural identities. This interaction produces complex urban identities that reflect both continuity and transformation within contemporary urban societies
