Between Institutional Deficiency And Patient Gratitude: The Quest For Recognition At Work Among Medical Residents In Algeria

Authors : Idris Souhila . Bahloul Farouk .

Abstract

This article examines the issue of recognition at work among medical residents in Algeria. It identifies the different forms and sources of recognition or non-recognition within the Bejaïa University Hospital and explores the experiences, perceptions, and expectations of medical residents. These young doctors face numerous responsibilities, including patient care, medical research, and the supervision of interns. They perform these duties within a deteriorating professional environment and under a demanding yet incomplete training system. As a result, they often suffer from a significant lack of institutional recognition. While recognition from peers is partial and situational, and acknowledgment from supervisors remains limited and discreet, patient recognition is notably increasing. This rise in patient gratitude stands in stark contrast to a professional context that emphasizes performance and technical skills. Faced with these challenges, resident physicians develop coping strategies, where self-recognition, based on the results of work—particularly the technical aspects of medical procedures—becomes the main source of the quest for recognition at work.
