This article analyses President Barack Obama’s Iran policy through the lens of selective engagement to gain a deeper insight of how a realist-informed grand strategy functions in an increasingly multipolar international order. Using an analytical descriptive approach, the study aims to demonstrate how Obama employed a form of selective engagement strategy combining calibrated coercion, targeted diplomatic outreach, and reliance on multilateral institutions to address the Iran nuclear issue. The research finds that the strategy culminating in the Iran nuclear deal is an important non-proliferation achievement, yet the undermining of the agreement since the withdrawal by the Trump administration reveals its limitations. The study argues that the grand strategy of selective engagement is still viable in a multipolar world but that it has to be adapted to the structural constraints of the current international system.
