Delaying Scottish Independence: Examining The Reasons Behind The Snp’s Loss

Authors : Bares Meryem . Elaggoune Abdelhak .

Abstract

The potential for Scotland to become an independent state was postponed to an unspecified future by the rejection of the independence proposal in the 2014 referendum. Since then, a number of observers have looked into the causes of this rejection. While some point the finger at the Scottish National Party's (SNP) lack of ability and its feeble "Yes" campaign, others denounce the British media's handling of the referendum, claiming it tried to sway public opinion in order to further unionist objectives and maintain Scotland's membership in the union. This article, however, contends that the partial or, more accurately biased role of British media coverage during the referendum campaign contributed to the number of Scots who were already sceptical of the idea of independence because they anticipated an uncertain political and economic future for Scotland outside of the United Kingdom.
