Abstract : Abdelwahab Aissaoui’s The Spartan Court offers a critical re-reading of Ottoman history in Algeria through a fictional framework that exposes its dual dimensions: exploitation and corruption, on the one hand, and relative stability and coexistence, on the other. Employing a polyphonic narrative, the novel presents diverse perspectives that undermine the authority of official historiography and highlight silenced or marginalized voices. By juxtaposing the Ottoman period with the onset of French colonization, the text demonstrates how the violence of the latter reshaped Algerian perceptions of the former, transforming memory and historical consciousness. In this sense, the novel operates as a counter-history that mediates between fiction and identity, while restoring value to popular memory as a site of resistance. The study thus raises a central question: to what extent can literature interrogate dominant historical narratives and generate alternative discourses that reframe identity and collective memory?
