This paper examines the role of the Arabic novel in preserving collective memory and formulating a critical identity consciousness. Starting from the problem of the fragmentation of official discourse prevalent in many Arab countries, whether due to the effects of colonialism, post-independence conflicts, or sub-identities, the study proposes the hypothesis that the novel has created an alternative narrative space that functions as a "vessel" for preserving and interpreting the past. The paper relies on the socio-historical method and narrative discourse analysis, by examining Algerian and Palestinian novelistic models that embodied collective tragedies and contributed to the formation of a counter-narrative to monolithic discourse. It concludes that the Arabic novel, through its activation of memory, contributes not only to preserving identity but also to manufacturing a critical cultural consciousness capable of questioning the past and envisioning a more balanced future.
