Abstract: The field of religious sciences constituted one of the most prominent domains that received significant attention in Islamic states during the medieval period. The Maghreb was no exception to this trend, particularly under the Zayyanid state (633–962 AH / 1236–1554 CE), which established Tlemcen as its capital. The city witnessed remarkable flourishing in sciences, arts, and literature, especially in religious disciplines such as jurisprudence (fiqh), Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith studies, and Sufism. This intellectual prosperity was particularly evident during the 7th and 8th centuries AH (13th–14th centuries CE), as a result of various factors that contributed to the stimulation of scholarly and intellectual activity, the prominence of distinguished scholars, and the spread of educational institutions, including madrasas, institutes, and mosques. These institutions attracted numerous students from different regions and were led by eminent scholars who undertook teaching responsibilities. This study aims to examine the factors behind this flourishing and to explore the dimensions of this dynamic scholarly movement, particularly in the field of religious sciences. It adopts an analytical approach based on the critical examination, reinterpretation, and utilization of historical sources to produce an objective and purposeful historical account. The findings reveal that Tlemcen emerged as a leading intellectual center that attracted prominent scholars and produced jurists, traditionists, and Sufis who achieved considerable scholarly distinction. This intellectual radiance can largely be attributed to the ruling authorities, many of whom sought to rival major scholarly centers in the western Islamic world by promoting learning and establishing educational and religious institutions that fulfilled these objectives.
