.Abstract This study aims to reveal the ideological dimension embedded in lexicographic texts found in bilingual school dictionaries (Arabic–French), particularly those intended for young learners, such as Larousse and Le Robert dictionaries. The study is based on the assumption that the lexicographic text constitutes a form of discourse that shares several textual principles with literary texts, including the expression of the author’s perspective and intentions toward the reader. From this standpoint, the study analyzes how the figure of the African child with black skin is represented in the illustrations and explanatory texts of these dictionaries. It also examines the semantic and cultural dimensions reflected in these representations, particularly regarding the child’s life between his country of origin in Africa and his host country, France, within a context that extends from the colonial period to the postcolonial era. The analysis of the selected examples reveals that lexicographic texts are not devoid of ideological and cultural implications that shape the representation of the African Other. These texts combine depictions of living conditions in Africa during periods marked by wars and colonization with attempts to present a reformist discourse aimed at integrating this figure into French society. Nevertheless, these representations simultaneously reveal the persistence of stereotypical or inferior perceptions of the African child, which appear in the accompanying illustrations and textual contexts. Consequently, the study confirms that the lexicographic text, despite its educational and descriptive nature, remains a discourse open to interpretation and critical analysis due to the cultural and ideological representations it conveys, which contribute to shaping the image of the Other in the consciousness of the young reader. Keywords: Black African child, colonialism, ideology, lexical and literary text
