This article examines the workings of implicitness and irony through the analysis of three fixed expressions in everyday French: cache ta joie (hide your joy), excusez du peu (excuse me), and sans blague (no joke). The study shows that these linguistic units rely on a systematic discrepancy between the literal and inferred meanings, a discrepancy that forms the basis of their ironic value. Using tests of fixedness (formal stability, resistance to lexical substitutions and syntactic transformations), the article highlights the non-compositional nature of these interjections and their function as pragmatic blocks.
