Linguistic Exploration On The Challenges And Prospects Of Cultural References In The Translation Of Black Literature

Résumé
The translation of black literature presents numerous challenges, particularly concerning the transposition of cultural references. These references, whether material or immaterial, are crucial for fully understanding and appreciating the original work. However, their translation can be challenging due to cultural differences between the source and target languages. In this presentation, we will examine the challenges related to translating cultural references in black literature. We will explore the various strategies employed by translators to convey these references effectively and faithfully to the original work. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of having knowledge of the original culture for a successful translation of cultural references. Our approach will be based on the analysis of concrete examples drawn from black literature translated into French. We will highlight the choices made by translators and the consequences of these choices on understanding.
