The fast technological advancement has impacted the assessment field. Nowadays, students can assess themselves using AI tools. However, their use is problematic: they either help learning or lead to cheating, especially in writing. Given the lack of research, at Tlemcen University, regarding technology-based writing self-assessment, the current study aims to identify the strategies used by students to develop writing self-assessment using technology and the role of the teacher in this process. To achieve this end, a case study was conducted, and data were collected through a triangular approach that included a semi-structured interview with teachers and a questionnaire for students. Next, data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively following a mixed-method approach. The main results of this study reveal that students seem to show a positive attitude towards technology-based self-assessment. They use digital tools to check grammar and vocabulary, brainstorm ideas, find references, and rephrase their original work. As to teachers, this study shows the existence of a sort of resistance from a large portion of them regarding technology integration into their classes. Accordingly, this research contributes, to some extent, to better understand both students’ and teachers’ attitudes towards this topic. It also provides the rationale behind the teachers’ standpoint.
