Abstract

Background: Postural deformities in adolescents are becoming a significant public health issue, as they can greatly affect musculoskeletal health, functional abilities, and overall well-being in the long run. Objective: This study aimed to explore how common, widespread, and severe postural deformities are among middle-school students who aren't involved in organized sports. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study involving 270 middle-school students in the Wilaya of Setif (Algeria) in 2022. To assess posture, we used a standardized visual grading system (NYRP) that looked at various anatomical areas, including head alignment, shoulder posture, spinal curves, pelvic alignment, abdominal posture, and foot structure. Each postural deviation was rated on a three-level scale (no deviation, slight deviation, marked deviation). The overall quality of posture was categorized as good, acceptable, or poor based on the cumulative scores from the New York Posture Rating test. Results: The findings indicated a high prevalence of postural deformities among the students. Overall posture assessment showed that 62.59% of participants had poor posture, 33.33% had acceptable posture, and only 4.07% were rated as having good posture. The most common postural issues included lateral head tilt (84%), rounded shoulders (77%), thoracic kyphosis (69%), abdominal protrusion (64%), and flat foot (60%). While most deformities were mild, a significant number of students exhibited moderate to severe deviations, indicating a potential risk for musculoskeletal problems. Conclusion: The high prevalence of postural deformities among middle-school students who do not engage in sports highlights the urgent need for early screening programs, school-based education on posture, and preventive or corrective physical activity interventions. By implementing structured posture-focused strategies in schools, we can help slow down the progression of musculoskeletal dysfunction and enhance the health of adolescents.
