Abstract

This study tested how well the Skiba models—linear, hyperbolic, and inverse time continuous—can predict time to exhaustion (TTE) in athletes. Twenty participants (age = 17.4 ± 0.5 years; VO₂max = 50.7–52.9 ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) performed exercise tests, and their predicted TTE values were compared with actual results using Jamovi 2.3.28. On average, all models underestimated performance (predicted ≈ 220 s vs. actual ≈ 284 s). Linear regression analyses showed weak relationships between predicted and actual TTE (R ≈ 0.29, R² ≈ 0.08), a large error (RMSE ≈ 36 s), and no statistical significance (p > 0.05). The hyperbolic and inverse-time models performed slightly better, but not enough to be reliable. These findings imply that while the Skiba framework utilizes valid critical power theory, it does not provide a valid prediction of real athletic performance without further calibration. Future studies will need to modify the model.
