Authors : Ghodbane Nacira .

Abstract

This study investigates the differing expectations of research supervision held by supervisors and Master 2 students at the Department of English, Batna 2 University, Algeria. Drawing on quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires, which were distributed to 60 supervisors and 60 master's 2 students. It examines 14 items related to topic selection, methodological guidance, emotional support, communication, and responsibility for thesis progress. Results reveal significant discrepancies between supervisors, who tend to emphasize their active role in directing research and providing support, and students, who advocate for greater autonomy and self-responsibility. The study highlights the impact of these mismatches on the supervisory relationship and academic progress. Descriptive statistics and a Chi-square test of independence confirm that these differences are significant across most supervisory processes, with supervisors favoring a more directive role and students advocating greater autonomy. The findings underscore the critical need for early alignment and negotiation of expectations to foster collaborative and productive supervisory relationships and enhance communication to foster more effective and satisfying supervision experiences. The study contributes valuable localized insights into postgraduate supervision practices in Algerian higher education, offering recommendations for policy and training improvements aimed at bridging expectation gaps.
