The Phonological Development In The Speech Of Children Of Collo At Skikda Speech Community

Authors : Bouacida Soumaya . Lahmar Taki Eddine .

Abstract

This study investigates phonological acquisition among Skikdi children, focusing on dialectal variations in Collo and applying Optimality Theory. This approach explores how mental ranking conflicts between markedness and faithfulness constraints shape speech development. Using experimental methods, including picture-naming and object-based tasks, speech from two age groups (3-4;5) was recorded and analyzed. Results reveal two inconsistent speech error patterns—assimilatory and non-assimilatory—indicating variability even within age groups. Early acquisition stages prioritize markedness constraints, while later stages favor faithfulness, leading to adult-like grammar. This dynamic hierarchy highlights the heterogeneous nature of phonological development in children of Collo.
