This article examines the persistent gender gap in access to social protection in Algeria, with a particular focus on women engaged in the informal economy. The study pursues two objectives: to assess the capacity of the Algerian social protection framework to integrate gender considerations, and to document the lived experiences of women excluded from contributory schemes. Methodologically, it combines a systematic review of academic and institutional literature, legal analysis, and qualitative fieldwork involving semi-structured interviews with ten informal workers in Tizi Ouzou. Findings reveal that, despite a robust legislative arsenal and recent reforms, the system remains structurally oriented towards formal employment, thereby excluding the majority of women in precarious, informal, or rural occupations. This exclusion is compounded by low awareness of rights, administrative barriers, and socio-cultural norms. The article concludes that achieving universal, gender-responsive social protection in Algeria requires structural reforms that integrate disaggregated data, portable rights, and targeted outreach to marginalised women.
