Abstract: The topic of women in Africa has historically been linked to themes of slavery and servitude, as well as the struggle to secure sustenance for their children and families, which has often resulted in the deprivation of their fundamental human rights. However, historical narratives encompass additional, frequently neglected dimensions regarding the experiences of African women. There exists a wealth of examples illustrating the valor of resilient African women who, in numerous instances, guided their communities toward triumph, success, and liberation, while exhibiting a level of political acumen that transcended their own beauty and femininity. This critical perspective informs my selection of this topic for my research paper, with a specific emphasis on West Africa and its ancient kingdoms. This geographic region has been subjected to historical injustices, as colonial biases and ideologies have marginalized the heroic and commendable contributions of African women during the pre-colonial period. Consequently, elucidating the interplay between women and governance and politics within these kingdoms represents a significant focus of this study. The research commenced with an inquiry into the political roles assumed by women in the kingdoms of West Africa and their connections to the governance of those realms, as illustrated by the examination of various historical instances. An inductive historical methodology was employed, drawing upon historical documents and primary sources. The study concluded that within the confines of the palaces of African kingdoms, the voices of women played an essential role in shaping significant state decisions, with women being instrumental in achieving some of the most remarkable political and military successes on the continent.
