Recently, the Algerian constitution has acknowledged Tamazight (a large minority language) as a second official language in the country. This language-related decision was the result of continuous demand and claim from the Tamazight-speaking community in Algeria. This article draws on the issue of Tamazight in Algeria, examines its use among Arabophone Algerians, and investigates the attitudes of the Arabophone Algerians towards this language. A sample of 141 participants responded to a 22-item questionnaire. The results suggest that the attribution of official status to Tamazight has barely had any impact on its use among the Arabophone community, as its use remains nearly non-existent. As far as attitudes are concerned, the findings reveal that they are contradictory towards Tamazight and its relation with language planning and language-in-education planning. Possible motives and implications are further discussed in the analysis.
