Abstract

This study examines the role of parental attitudes and involvement in their children’s learning of Standard Arabic (SA) in an Algerian context where Dialectal Arabic is the mother tongue. Given the diglossic nature of the society, the language difficulties that children face at school become central issues in the field of education. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a questionnaire and interviews, the study involved 132 parents and 11 primary school Arabic teachers randomly selected from Tlemcen speech community. The research investigates the impact of parental attitudes on children's learning of Standard Arabic (SA), examining how these attitudes contribute to children's linguistic proficiency and exploring the various factors that shape and influence them. Data analysis using SPSS revealed a positive correlation between parental attitudes towards SA and children's competence, with more positive attitudes leading to higher proficiency. Teachers confirmed that parental supportive actions outside the classroom favor pupils’ linguistic development. Factors shaping these attitudes include socio-economic status, parental education, cultural upbringing, academic specialization, community influence, and the perceived importance of SA. These findings confirm that parents’ positive attitudes and dedicated involvement are central determinants in enhancing pupils’ academic achievement through proficiency in SA, the school language. The study highlights the necessity of collaboration between parents and teachers to enhance effective language practices, as their joint efforts can create a more supportive learning environment and lead to better outcomes.
